Pregnancy Pain Relief: A Guide For Expecting Moms

If you're expecting a baby, you know that pregnancy comes with its ups and downs. A common problem during pregnancy is discomfort or even pain in the joints and muscles. If you're struggling with daily pain, there are a few things you can do to help minimize it.

1. See a chiropractor.

During pregnancy, your body releases a hormone called relaxin that causes your ligaments to loosen. This means that your bones are not held in their positions as tightly and things can move around, especially you hips, lower back, and pelvis. This hormone makes it possible for the baby to move through the birth canal, but it can also be a source of discomfort.

Since your joints can experience subluxation more easily, it's a good idea to see a chiropractor regularly during pregnancy to put everything back in place. not only with this help with joint pain, but it can help with muscles pain as well, because when your joints are not aligned, your muscles can be pulled or pushed too much in one direction, leading to imbalance.

2. Use a pregnancy pillow.

Many women get hip pain during pregnancy because they must sleep on their side instead of on their back. Sleeping on your side is usually fine, but because your hips widen and because your belly pulls your body downward, your spine doesn't stay aligned and your hips dig into the mattress, causing pain during sleep and residual discomfort throughout the day.

Pregnancy pillows help to support your belly and your back during sleep. They also go between your legs to help restore alignment to your pelvis and hip area. Many women find that sleep is much more bearable with this pillow for support.

3. Stay active.

You may not feel like working out during pregnancy, especially if you are feeling nauseous or constantly feel achey. However, staying active helps to keep your muscles strong, and strength in your body is one of the best ways to combat joint pain. If you can't handle impact workouts, swimming is a great exercise for expecting moms. The water takes the weight off your joints, so you experience a temporary relief from pain.

Working out also helps to prevent excess weight gain during pregnancy, which can be another source of pain if your body is not used to carrying that much weight.
